Are the SATs Irrelevant free essay sample

In her pop-De piece, It Doesnt Test For Success, (Creighton), Joanne V Creighton, PHD asserts that standardized test scores such as the Cats are no longer useful in predicting the potential successes of todays students. Dry. Creighton, who at the time was President of Mount Holyoke College, cited the errors in scoring on the SAT for approximately 4,000 students. We will write a custom essay sample on Are the SATs Irrelevant? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page She further stated that while the test may have made sense when first developed, it no longer presents an accurate portrait of the potential of todays college-bound students. While Dry. Creighton presents some valid points, I do not believe we should completely disregard the value of the Cats. This is a complex issue with many things to consider and, as the saying goes, lets not throw out the baby with the bathwater Just yet. The catalyst for Dry. Creighton article appears to be the error in reporting the SAT scores for approximately 4,000 students. This error was the result of a technical issue encountered during the scanning of the answer sheets. These 4,000 students represented less than 1% of all students taking the test during that sitting (Pope). To condemn the overall value and relevance of the test based on what amounts to a computer error is an overreaction. Although it was most certainly an inconvenience and caused stress to those involved, the error was caught, the scores were recalculated, and the correct information was communicated to the students and other interested parties. Dry. Creighton goes on to make the valid point that a one-size fits all test could not adequately assess the diverse populations of students and schools that make up the U. S. Educational landscape. (Creighton) She also points out that the most prestigious universities are primarily made up of whites, Asians, and the wealthy, while the number of students being educated from the lower end of the economic scale is extremely low. While this may not be the level playing field that the developers of the test had envisioned, I do not think it is fair to blame that statistic solely on the results of the SAT. Other influences come into play. A report by the National Center for Education Statistics found that while qualified low-income students attend college at rates similar to qualified middle-income students, college- qualified students who believe that college is unaffordable, such as low-income and minority students, are less likely to take the necessary steps to enroll in college, such as taking the SAT. (SST. John) The solution to the problem of low enrollment numbers of qualified low-income and minority students would then appear to be better communication of the ways to make college affordable. This, in turn, would increase the number of students taking college entrance exam, thereby increasing the umber of students from the lower end of the economic scale receiving college educations. The annual college rankings report by U. S. News and World Report is another measurement that Dry. Creighton finds lacking. On this point I am inclined to agree with her. This report considers information other than the academic performance of students when compiling its rankings, such as acceptance rate and alumni donations, which gives the appearance off biased report. Mount Holyoke College stopped requiring the SAT tort admission in 2001, making it optional. According to Dry. Creighton, since they stopped requiring the SAT, the school has been studying the effects as a result. Upon finding no meaningful difference in academic performance between the students who did not submit scores and those who did (Creighton), the school came to the conclusion that the SAT is unnecessary to predict future academic performance. This study also confirmed that the higher the income level of a students family, the more likely the student will take advantage of tutoring or special instruction on taking the SAT. In Dry. Creighton opinion, this calls into question the credibility of the SAT. I think this statement is a little strong. The students who cannot afford private tutors or preparation lessons for taking the SAT do have other options. The public library has preparation workbooks available to everybody free of charge. There are online resources to help prepare for the test, which can also be accessed at the public library free of charge. The answer, according to Dry. Creighton, is to look at a students overall high school reference, activities, and recommendations and to disregard the SAT scores. I agree that this approach does offer a more balanced view of the student as a whole. It is important for a student to be well rounded, and not Just an accomplished test taker. I still think that SAT scores should at least be a part of the equation. Even though a student may be well rounded, he still must be able to take and pass standardized tests in order to proceed and eventually graduate from college. I applaud Dry. Creighton persistence in encouraging colleges to look at the big picture hen selecting students to accept. It is important, however, to maintain a balance and not swing from one extreme to another. SAT scores are but one criterion of several that should be looked at by college admissions offices when selecting the right students to attend their school. Works Cited Creighton, Joanne V. Dry. The National Youth Leadership Forum Should You Go

The National Youth Leadership Forum Should You Go SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Have you heard of the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF)? Perhaps you’ve heard that attending the NYLF is a great way to improve your chances of getting into top colleges, and you’re wondering if that’s true or not.Spoiler: If you're considering NYLF because you think it's prestigious, you'd be dead wrong. Keep reading to find out why. This guide will explain what NYLF is, what its benefits and drawbacks are, and how you can decide whether or not you should participate in it. What Is the National Youth Leadership Forum? The National Youth Leadership Forum is a groupof summer programs designed to introduce select high school students to different careers and help prepare them for college and future jobs. NYLF is owned by Envision EMI, a for-profit company that creates and runs numerous other youth leadership programs, such as Lead America, the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, and the National Young Scholars Program. A program similar to NYLF is theNational Student Leadership Conference (NSLC). Like the National Youth Leadership Forum, NSLCruns programs for high school students that are focused on specificcareer fields,but NSLC has more of a focus on developing leadership skills. During NYLF, students live in college dorms at different campuses across the country such as Harvard, Stanford, and NYU. Studentsattend lectures and events on campus or nearby during field trips.NYLF marketstheir programs as a way to givestudents the knowledge and experience they need to succeed in college and their future careers.The National Youth Leadership Forumoffers seven programs for high school students in six career fields: medicine, national security, law CSI, business, engineering, and media. I've briefly described each of them below. NYLF Medicine NYLFmedicine programs are nine days long. They include lectures and meetings with prominent doctors, visits to amedical school campus, hands-on practice with diagnostic tools, and lecturesonhealth carecareers. NYLF Advanced Medicine Health Care NYLFadvanved medicine programs are ten days long. They cover the same information as regular NYLF Medicine programs but are a day longer and only take place at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. NYLF National Security NYLF programs in national security are six days long and help prepare participants for careers in defense, intelligence, and the diplomatic corps. Participants meet with members of the military and federal agencies, visit places such as the Pentagon and U.S. Naval Academy, and learn how to employ a crisis decision-making process. NYLF Law and CSI Programs are six days long and teach students about careers in legal and forensic science fields. Participants hear lectures from prominent lawyers and members of the FBI, visit a courthouse or laboratory and interact with professionals, and take part in a Supreme Court Simulation where they learn about the judicial process and how to argue effectively. NYLF Business Innovation NYLF Business Innovation programs last six days and are designed to teach participants about careers in the business world. Students take part in business workshops and compete in a corporate simulation. NYLF Engineering and Technology These programs last eight days and focus on multiple engineering fields, such as sustainable design, robotics, and web design. Students in this program develop their own digital model and learn about innovative engineering technology. NYLF Media: Advertising, Film, and Journalism During this eight day program, students are introduced to different careers that relate to digital media. Participants produce a digital newspaper or magazine and learn about digital-age reporting. How Do You Apply to NYLF? The first step to applying for an NYLF program is to be nominated ornominate yourself. You may have heard of NYLF because you werenominated as a potential candidate for the program.You can be nominated by a teacher, leader from a youth organization, counselor, or through certain talent development programs. Being nominated only means someone thought you might be a good fit for the program, but it doesn't get you special privileges, and it isn't required to attend NYLF. Ifyou haven’t been nominated, you can still nominate yourself and applyfor the program you are interested in on NYLF’s website. Applying only requires submitting some basic information about yourself and your school. Once you have entered that information you are able to reserve a spotand put down a deposit for the program of your choice. After you enroll, you will receive a confirmation e-mail that will direct you to a website withall the information you need to participate in an NYLF program, such as program updates, pre-conference assignments, and a travel checklist. How Competitive Is NYLF? The National Youth Leadership Forum markets itself as a program exclusivelyfor top students. However, there areno admission criteria for NYLF.Anyone who is currently a high school student can register for and attend an NYLF program. You don't need to have a certain GPA, extracurriculars, or leadership experience. NYLF emphasizes the fact that students must be nominated as a way to show its "competitiveness."However, these nominations are sent to thousands of students eachyear, often regardless of their academic abilities, as a way forNYLF's parent company, Envision, to increase the number of students participating in and paying for its programs. Additionally, being nominated is not required to attend NYLF. Any high school student can nominate himself or herselfand automatically be eligible to enroll inan NYLF program. Despite NYLF's claim to be a prestigiousorganization that only selects top students and leaders, the reality is that the program is open to all high school studentsas long as they arewilling to pay the required costs. NYLF programs can have benefits, which I discuss in more detail in the following sections, but it's important for students and their parents to know that neither being nominated for NYLFnor attending one of itsprograms provesany academic or leadership skills on the part of the student. What Are the Benefits of Participating in NYLF? There can definitely be benefits to attend an NYLF program, and I've listed some of the most important of them below. Benefit 1: Learn About Particular Careers One major benefit of attending an NYLF program is that you can choose a program in the field you want to work in, such as medicine, law, or diplomacy, and gain hands-on experience in that field. For example, if you participate in the NYLF Medicine program, you will observe and speak to doctors, learn about new medical technology, and participate in medical simulations, similar to what actual med students do.These experiences can help you gain skills you can use later on in college and your career, and they give you a taste for what a future career in that field might be like. You may find that you actually don’t like medicine as much as you thought you wouldbut insteaddiscovered another career field that you find really interesting. It’s much better to learn this nowthan halfway through college because switching your major can sometimes delay graduation. Benefit 2: Form New Relationships Each NYLF program includes lectures by industry professionals.These guest lecturers, who are often leaders in their field, speak with students about their career path and the industry in general.Hearing lectures from people in a specific career fieldgives program participants the opportunity to learn more about what a certain career is like and have their questions answered by someone who has a lot of relevant experience. Students also often form personal relationships at NYLFprograms.After spending several days together, many participants return home with new friends who are often interested in the same careers as they are.After the program ends, these friends can provide advice when you are looking at different colleges, majors, and jobs. Benefit 3: Experience College Life Participating in an NYLF program can also introduce you to college and the collegiate life.All NYLF conferences take place on college campuses, with students housed in college dorms. Participating in a program where you live on campus can be very helpful for students who may not know much about college and want to see what it will be like while still in high school. There is also the option of receiving up to two college credits from your NYLF experience.However, students interested in earning college credit should be aware that the credits are pass/fail, they come with an extra fee, and not all colleges will accept credits earned at an NYLF program. What Are the Drawbacks of Participating in NYLF? Despite the benefits of NYLF, they are often not the best investment. I've listed some of the major drawbacks of these programs below. Drawback 1: Programs Are Often Short All NYLF programs are betweensix and ten days long. While this may be long enough to introduce you to a subject and give you some hands-on experience, it’s very difficult to gain much in-depth knowledge in such a short time. Students looking for thorough and detailed knowledge of a particular job or career field will likely not be able to gain the amount of information they’d want from an NYLF program.The short program length can also make it difficult to cultivate strong relationships with both program mentors and other participants. Drawback 2: Costs Despite their short length, NYLF programs have high price tags.Including required program fees,an NYLF program costsroughly between $3000 and $4000 to attend, depending on the program chosen. This program fee includes two meals a day, housing, transportation during the program, and materials. It does not include lunch, transportation to and from the program site, and college credit fees.Paying several thousand dollars for a short program can be difficult for many high schoolstudentsand their families.NYLF does offer some scholarships and tips for fundraising to help offset costs; however, students should expect to pay the entire program fee. It's possible to have the same or similar experiences to those of an NYLF program for a fraction of the cost. This option is discussed in more detail in the following section. We want to get you admitted to your dream schools. Learn more about PrepScholar Admissions to maximize your chance of getting in. Drawback 3:Not as Exclusive as Marketed The National Youth Leadership Forummarkets itself as a competitive program that only invites and accepts top-notch students.However, Envision, the company that runs NYLF and many similar programs, is a for-profit company.Their goal is to maximize profits, so they want as many students to enroll in their programs as possible. In 2009, Envision hosted Presidential Youth Inaugural Conferences that claimed to offer students the opportunity to attend exclusive events in Washington D.C. Over 15,000 students paid to attend this event, and many were surprised at the number of participants and felt that Envision wasn’t prepared to handle such a large number of students. Many also felt that Envisiondidn’t provide access to all the events they promised students would be able to attend. Numerousstudents and parents filed complaints, and Envision ended up settling a lawsuit and promised to pay up to $17 million in vouchers to attendees of the conference. While NYLF emphasizes the fact that students are â€Å"invited† to attend, any student can apply to NYLFwithout receiving an invitation. In fact, there is no longer any GPA, leadership or academic achievement requirement needed to attend. Any current high school student who can afford the program fee can attend an NYLF program, making it not competitive or prestigious at all. Participating in NYLF is not as prestigious as they want you to think it is. Should You Participate in NYLF? So how useful isNYLF? The short answer is that it depends on why you’re interested in attending. Some people find NYLF programs fun and useful while others see them as expensive resume padding. There are good reasons for participating in the NYLF and reasons that are not as strong. Think carefully about why you are interested in attending and read on to help make your decision. Good Reasons to Attend an NYLF Program You want to learn more about a specific career field. You want to meet students with similar interests. You want to prepare for college. An NYLF program can be a good way to learn about a specific career and gain hands-on experience in it. Attending an NYLF program also gives you an opportunity to meet other students who are interested in the same career field. Sometimes these connections can become lasting friendships. Also, if you are curious or a bit apprehensive about college and want to experience things like living in a dorm and eating in a dining hall, you can do this at an NYLF program. If you are able to afford an NYLF program and one or more of the above reasons interest you, then you may want to consider looking more seriously into enrolling. However, be aware that NYLF programs are not the only way to achieve any of the above goals. If you are unable to attend an NYLF program, there are numerous other ways to have similar experiences. Students who want to learn more about a specific career can do an internship or job shadow, those who want to meet students with similar interests can join a club or volunteer, and those who want to experience college can visit a school they are interested in. Many colleges offer overnight stays in the dorms to students who are thinking aboutattending that school. Weak Reasons for Attendingan NYLF Program While there are certainly strong reasons to participate in an NYLF program, there are also reasons that you should not use to justify attending. I've discussed severalof these weak reasons below, and, for each reason, I've given analternative solutionthat you may want to consider insteadof an NYLF program. Weak Reason 1: You Think It Will Impress Colleges The truth is that having an NYLF program on your resume or college application is not any more impressive than other extracurricular activities, such as participating in the school tennis team or math club. In fact, it may even appear less impressive because you had to pay to participate and weren't accepted based on any skills or knowledge you had. Colleges don’t need to see that you participated in the NYLF in order to decide whether you are smart or a potential leader; they can discern those things just by looking at your grades and extracurricular activities. This is especially true since there are no requirements to participate in NYLF other than being a high school student and being able to afford the program fee. Alternative Idea: Gain expertise and leadership experience through your extracurriculars.If you are looking to increase your chances of getting into college by having strong extracurriculars, choose activities that relate to your interests and allow you to obtain leadership positions. Sticking with an extracurricular, no matter what it is, and acquiring more responsibility is more impressive than a short-term NYLF program because it gives schools a better idea ofyour interests and abilities. If you need help deciding on what activities to do, we have a list of hundreds of extracurriculars for you to browse! Weak Reason 2: You Want an In-Depth Look at a Certain Career While NYLF programs can teach you more about a particularcareer and give you the opportunity to hear lectures and participate in hands-on activities that relate to it, the programs are simply too short to provide thorough knowledge of a certaincareer. Alternative Idea:If you are really looking for a way get comprehensive knowledge on a career, consider doing an internship.Internships are generally several weeks to several months long, and doing onewill give you much more time to learn whata particular job is really like day-to-day. Weak Reason 3: You Want to Network With Professionals The web pagefor each NYLF program contains a list of prestigious guest speakers who have given lectures to previous program participants.While these guest lecturers are often leaders in their field and very knowledgeable, you shouldn’t sign up for an NYLF program thinking it will give you the opportunity to network with them and potentially get an internship or job. Most of the guest lecturers simply give their presentation and answer questions afterward, with pretty much no opportunity for students to speak with them one-on-one. Alternative Idea:If you are interested in getting to know professionals in a certain career field personally, consider an internship orjob shadow. Both of these options offer more opportunities for getting to know current workers, and by working directly with them or observing them, you will be more memorable than if you were simply sitting in the audience. Thiswill make those professionalsmore likely to remember you in the future and possibly recommend you for future jobs. Weak Reason 4: You Want to Earn College Credit While it is possible to earn college credit during an NYLF program, this should not be a primary reason for you to enroll.Through the NYLF, students can earn two pass/fail college credits if they pay an extra fee of several hundred dollars. Most college classes are three credits, so receiving credit for the equivalent of less than one class will not help you graduate college any sooner or give you much of a head start.Additionally, many colleges do not accept these credits because they didn’t take place in a classroom environment and were earned over a short period of time. Alternative Idea:Take classes at your local community college or a nearby university. You can also concentrate on AP/IB classes.If you are interested in earning college credit, you can often earn more credits for much less money by passing AP or IB exams (which many colleges accept as college credit) or by taking classes at a community college. Summary In short, the National Student Leadership Forumcan provide useful and interesting opportunities for high school students, but it isnot better or more impressive than other extracurriculars. While NYLF programs can give participants the opportunity to learn more about certain careers, meet new and interesting people, and experience collegiate life, there are multiple other ways for students to achieve each of these experiences, such as by joining a school club or doing an internship. NYLF programs cost several thousand dollars and this high price tag, along with the fact that the programs last only a few days, shoulddeter people who are interested in gaining in-depth knowledge or developing close relationships.Although NYLF claims to be prestigious and competitive, any high school student can enroll in one of itsprograms, and colleges do not find participating in it to be any more impressive than a normal summer camp or extracurricular. If you can afford it and think that an NYLF program would be useful to you, then consider attending one; many past participants have spoken positively about their experience. However, if you cannot or would rather not participate, don’t worry about it hurting your chances of getting into college or finding a job.There are plenty of ways to get the same benefits that NYLF offers that are likely closer to home and much less expensive. General George Marshall's Leadership Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

General George Marshall's Leadership - Essay Example U.S Presidents and Congressional members as well as world leaders admired Marshall because of his abiding sense of fair play, integrity and trustworthiness. General Marshall was the backbone of the ground and air forces, which helped the Allies fight the Axis powers in the most devastating war the world, had witnessed till then. But, surprisingly, Marshall was a man of peace and detested war. Post war when he was the Secretary of State, he forwarded the proposal of rebuilding the economy of Europe and pushed for peace. He is remembered more for the Marshall Plan, which saved Europe and other countries after the war. His character and accomplishments were so continuously extraordinary that he is regularly bracketed in the same category as George Washington. His statesmanship, leadership, selflessness, sense of duty and honor were so exceptional that he continues to be a role model for soldiers as well as civilians even today. Right from the humble soldier to the powerful president, everyone venerates him and his career and life is exemplary. President Harry S. Truman thought of George Marshall as ‘the greatest man he knew’. According to Winston Churchill, "There are few men whose qualities of mind and character have impressed me so deeply as those of General Marshall ... He is a great American, but he is far more than that ... He has always fought victoriously against defeatism, discouragement and disillusion. Succeeding generations must not be allowed to forget his achievements and his example." (Soldier-Statesman)-high praise indeed from a man considered being one of the greatest leaders of the world himself. George Catlett Marshall was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on the 31st of December, 1880. He lived with his parents till 1901. He was the youngest of the four children and was a shy and reserved youth. He went to the Virginia Military institute in Lexington, Virginia from September 1897-June 1901 and majored in civil

The Introduction to Business Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Introduction to Business Law - Essay Example This law is called the judge made law. In case of statute law made by the parliament judges interpret in accordance and in connotation with the facts and issues. The quality decisions come from quality of judges and the success of any trade or business if not entirely at least partly depends up on the quality decisions of the judges. Therefore the first part of the statement 'The commercial success of the City of London is, in part, dependent on the quality of the judges in the Commercial Court' is rightly said. It is not in dispute that the judges working all the areas of work in England and Wales are of the highest calibre. They have created a strong and independent judiciary which command respect nationally and internationally. However, an independent Judicial Appointments Commission will take responsibility for the selection of judges in England and Wales cannot be seen as an attempt by Governement to meddle with the justice delivering system. As of now all the judicial appointments are entirely in the hands of the Government. To have a transparent, independant judicial system it is imperative that the system must be independent from governement. If the appointments of the judges are in the hands of governement, it is quite not possible to believe that the judiciary is independent of governement. The existing Commission has not received any criticism and it proved it is efficient and successful. But the commission is assigned with limited functions such as (a) conducting an ongoing audit of judcial appointments, with a right to access every document, access to interviews and shifts and opinion in relation to every appointment. (b) to recommond the Lord Chancellar to improve the process of appointment (c) to consider complaints relating to application appointment procedures in individual cases (d) to receive coments from organisation and individuals on appointment process. With these limited assignments it could achieve limited results. Under the existing system the responsibility of appointing the judiciary is solly resting on Lord Chancellor, and Governement Minister. Commission has not much involvement in appointment procedure except as an observator. This system could not win the confidence of the public. Apart from this, as judicial appointments are made from a pool of qualified and meritorious candidates, this small group of intellectuals is dominent by white, male and a specific narrow social background. Without distrubing the standards for appointment of a judge, it is necessary to open up the system to have people of calibre from myriad social as well as legal backgrounds so as to represent the society as a whole. The commission has to see that the appointment procedures attract more women, more minority members, and lawyers from a wider range of practice. Such a system affords opportunities to all qualified candidates with the appropriate professional skills and expertise. This will instill

Communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 18

Communication - Essay Example ficant percentage of the sexist language entails depiction of women: a good example is of the words ‘a blonde’ –such words used in a statement act as a representation of women hence belittle their lives and place an extra level of personal judgment on them. This makes it very hard for people of the female gender to communicate or even open up especially to the people who use the sexist language; moreover, it creates hatred leading to lack of respect especially between the youth and their elders. Over the years, language has played a significant role in race relations with some words being used offensively and others honorably; shockingly, it is through this that up to date that people still argue as to whether the ’N word’, popularly used to describe people of the African American background should be used. Most people are of the idea that using inoffensive language is all about political correctness whereas it’s not; it’s about valuing others and creating strong relationships with people from diverse ethnic backgrounds which automatically enhances communication (Kareem 1). Racist language is all about language and culture which is why different words have dissimilar meanings to some people from diverse ethnic backgrounds i.e. the word ‘loaded’ doesn’t have the same meaning to Native Americans and Africans. Apparently, racist language is one of the core barriers of communication; for instance, the ‘N word’ has created rivalry and mystification between the African Americans and the white people in the American society, making it hard for the two address each other especially in public. This might be due to some people finding the word offensive hence loathing those that use it to refer to them or possibly because some people use it deliberately to offend and humiliate the African Americans. Typically, homophobic language is used as a form of insult against the gay and most people find it difficult and time consuming to campaign against;

The Many Faces Of Kindness Today English Language Essay

The Many Faces Of Kindness Today English Language Essay Kindness is an act of compassion, humanity, love, concern and sympathy. Kindness is worship, kindness is religion. Kindness is a behaviour that spreads joy, joy that has no borders, joy that is universal. And its relevance in modern day and every day cant be discounted. Acts of simple kindness make us the humans we are. Kindness of varying degree separates us from any other species. Its kindness and love that people seek and that people give. DEFINING KINDNESS: Kindness is the language which the dumb can speak, the deaf can hear the blind can see.   ~Mark Twain kindness_01.jpgKindness is the act or the state of being kind and marked by charitable behaviour, mild disposition, pleasantness, tenderness and concern for others  [1]  . It is a recognized value in many cultures and religions. Kindness In philosophy According to book two of Aristotles Rhetoric it is one of the emotions (see list of emotions), which is defined as being helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped  [2]  . Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche argued that kindness and love are the most curative herbs and agents in human intercourse Kindness is considered to be one of the Knightly Virtues. Kindness In religion It is considered to be one of the seven virtues, specifically the one of the Seven Contrary Virtues (direct opposites of the seven deadly sins) that is the direct opposite to envy  [3]  . The Talmud claims that deeds of kindness are equal in weight to all the commandments. Paul of Tarsus defines love as being patient and kind (I Corinthians). In Buddhism, one of the Ten Perfections (Paramitas) is MettÄ , which is usually translated into English as loving-kindness. Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama wrote my religion is kindness and authored a book entitled Kindness, Clarity, and Insight  [4]  . Confucius urges his followers to recompense kindness with kindness. Kindness In psychology In a study of 37 cultures around the world, sixteen thousand subjects were asked about their most desired traits in a mate. For both sexes, the first preference was kindness (the second was intelligence)  [5]  . CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: I expect to pass through life but once.   If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.   ~William Penn compassion.jpg History of Kindness: Every civilization -the Aryan, the Greek, the ancient Chinese laid utmost emphasis on kindness and many a holy books have kindness as their central theme. For instance, we find the usage of kindness in the Holy Bible through the following verse. One of the reasons for salvation and eternal life is to display the kindness of God in the ages to come. Ephesians 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. Titus 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared Components of Kindness: Kindness is a very broad term. Anything the first person does, to make the second person feel good can be categorized as kindness. However, in our study we would consider the mathematical formula for kindness and the accompanying components in it given by Chuck Wall, Kindnessusa.org. Mathematical Formula for Kindness  [6]  :   A mathematical formula was created to explain the components (K= à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã… ¾/à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬Ëœ CH(R+D)/i=1). Kindness means that compassion (C), humility (H), dignity (D), and respect (R) equal the sum of everything together set in motion by just one person for all time. The four virtues are explained in the following manner. Compassion is empathy and caring about the feelings of others. Humility is to be humble, not boastful or arrogant. Respect is to treat others with courtesy and honour. Dignity is being worthy to be honoured or esteemed. Put simply, kindness is the conscious act of engaging others in a positive way without asking whether those individuals deserve to be treated kindly. All living beings thrive on kindness. A single, sincere compliment can turn a persons entire world around. Holding a door or thanking someone who has held a door for you can inspire others to practice politeness and make already kind individuals feel good about their efforts. Smiling at people you meet-even those who make you feel like frowning-can turn a dreary encounter into a delightful one, for both of you. Every kind act has a positive influence on the individual who has performed said act as well as on the recipient, regardless of whether the act is acknowledged. Kindness brings about more kindness and slowly but surely takes a positive toll on humanity. Kindness to an Individual and in a Group: Genuine and unassuming kindness is one trait that people never fail to undervalue. As someone said, kindness is like snow it beautifies everything it covers. Kindness is the elixir to happy life. Hence, a positive impact of kindness is to be seen; whether its to an individual or once one is kind to others in a group. Kindness is all pervasive, it instils warmth in everyone to whom its meted out to, and its difficult for anyone to stay indifferent. REVIEW OF LITERATURE: Of neighbourhoods, kindness is the most beautiful. How can the man be considered wise who when he had the choice does not settle in kindness. ~ Confucius We would try to review different literature forms, for instance from contemporary art form (books and movies) to different mythological sources for finding reference of kindness there. Lets start with contemporary works, a book on kindness. A Short Course in Kindness by Margot Silk Forrest: This wonderful little book is full of stories that inspires and motivates, that are thought provoking and gives perfectly plausible ideas to make world a kinder place. Margot Silk Forrest in her book says Kindness is the wise use of the heart. A purely heartfelt action wont necessary be a kind one it could be misguided or uninformed. It takes wisdom and heart to notice when someone needs our help and to see what kind of help they need. Kindness wont necessarily be kindness if it is not put to use. Action is required. Thinking kind thoughts is all well and good. It will calm and purify your mind stream. But at some point, we have to get up and act on our kind intentions  [7]  . Its this message of moving from kind thoughts to real actions that makes this book different and a fun read. Kindness in Sacred Scriptures: Without a single exception, all sacred scriptures talk about kindness to fellow beings and to the greater environment in varying extent. For instance, Colossians 3:12 from the New Living Translation Bible says: Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Citing from the Holy Quran, it talks about Prophet Muhammad being the embodiment of mercy and he showed compassion and kindness to all those around him family, orphans, friends, strangers and even enemies.   Quran says Prophet even emphasized kind treatment of environment and animals, with respect and mercy.   He taught his followers that because animals were part of Gods creation they must be treated with dignity and due care. Following is our reference for the same, a citation from Quran 21:07. And We have sent you O Muhammad not but as a mercy for all of humankind, jinn, and all that exists. Similarly, we understand kindness we realize the very purpose of life is to be happy. We desire contentment and thats from the very core of our being. His Holiness Dalai Lama says the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being. Cultivating a close, warm hearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the principal source of success in life. Since we are not solely material creatures, it is a mistake to place all our hopes for happiness on external development alone. The key is to develop inner peace.  [8]  Even according to the sacred texts of Hinduism, kindness and hospitality are considered key values. Its a cardinal virtue and finds mention in Vedas the Hindu holy scriptures. Kindness is one of the four virtues in Buddhism that if practiced has the power to cause the practitioner to be re-born into a Brahma Realm. According to the Buddhist scripts, these virtues are highly regarded as powerful antidotes to negative mental states (non-virtues) such as avarice, anger and pride.  [9]   Kindness in Modern Art (movies): Lage Raho Munna Bhai: A study on any behaviour can never be complete without taking into consideration the popular impact. Many movies with Kindness as their theme have been made. We would do a small case study on the hindi movie Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006) as it had kindness and non-violence has its theme and comment on the results of a survey, presented in the following pages. EMPERICAL STUDY: To study the behaviour of kindness and how people view it, we have adopted the method of survey. A questionnaire comprising 14 questions was circulated among the students of XLRI, with 80 students taking the survey and responding.  [10]  The survey questionnaire was designed so as to reflect different aspects of the Kindness behaviour and how people react to and practise it, against an individual or in a group. The questionnaire also tried to take opinions on first what they think is kindness and also, the concept of being kind to be oneself, as against being to an individual or kindness in a group. Also, a case in the form of hindi movie Lage Raho Munnabhai was given and the survey included 3 questions on the same. We would take the survey results in the next section as we analyze them. FINDINGS OF STUDY AND GENERALIZATION: Let us analyze the findings from the results of the survey. We would do so by taking blocks of questions of varying size. Henrik Isbens A Dolls House Essay -- A Dolls House Essays

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  A doll house by Henrik Ibsen is a modern drama whose characters fail to understand who they really are. The theme of self-discovery can be viewed throughout the entire play. Nora’s character plays an important role in self-discovery. She is a dynamic character who proves at the end of the play that she accept and discovers who the true Nora is.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The play begins with a direct emphasis on Nora and her husband (Torvald) relationship. One can easily assume that their relationship is based on material things and status. It appears that money is the one thing which is keeping their marriage what is considered to be happy. Throughout the first act Torvald immediately begins referring to his wife with childlike names. In the first opening lines he refers to Nora as â€Å"my squirrel.† Throughout the play, Torvald continues to uses nick names such as â€Å"little song bird†, â€Å"skylark†, â€Å"odd little one† and many more belittling names. The usage of the above nicknames shows that Torvald feels superior to Nora. He wants to keep her small and under him. For this reason, he continues to refer to Nora in this manner throughout the play. Torvald and Nora’s relationship can be viewed at first as a happy and pleasant one. At the same time one may view their relationship as that of the ordinary. Torvald does not see Nora as an equal. He fails to realize that she is a woman and not a child. He continues to speak to her in a childish manner because he views her for her appearance and not for who she really is. It is clearly presented that Torvald takes his position as being superior because he feels that Nora is dependent on him. He believes she is narrow minded and ignorant because she is a woman.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the first act it is also indicated that money plays an important role throughout the play. Nora proves to be an insensitive and self-centered woman when she is visited by her old friend Mrs. Linde. Her first ignorant questions were whether Mrs. Linde husband left her any money or children. Mrs. Linde states that she was left penniless and that she has struggled. Nora being the self-centered person that she is begins bragging of her good fortune and forgets to acknowledge Mrs. Linde struggles. The above scene provides a vivid understanding of the type o... ...actions he becomes enraged. He worries about the effect this will have on his reputation and not on the consequences his wife may have to face. Through the unraveling of this secret is that Nora is finally able to understand who she is. Nora realizes that Torvald never loved her for who she was but for the things she did. Torvald loved her because she allowed him to play and control her as if she were real a doll. Nora begins to also understand that the love Torvald shared for her was the same to that of her father. Everything was based on what they felt was entertaining and not on loving Nora for who she is. The end of Act III brings Nora to a complete self- discovery. Nora has come to understand herself and the ones around her life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In conclusion, A Doll House is a modern drama which is derived on self- discovery and understanding. Nora had to take a stand and do something on her own in order to realize that she is capable of being independent. Through her actions she was able to discovery that there is more to her life than being a passive and untrue person. Nora was finally able to come to terms and let out her true self.

Ethics and Business Practice

One of the many challenges facing businesses today is how to harmonize their organization, work and professional ethics in line with the prevailing business practices and environment. Beckton Dickinson lies between a rock and a hard place. They would want to carryout their business activities strictly adhering to not only their organization’s policies and ethics but also the stipulations by the US government that vehemently outlaw any form of corruption or bribery.The US laws on international trade made it illegal for any multinational operating both at home or in foreign territories, to engage in any malpractice that seeks to influence a decision by any government, institution or individual. Many multinationals especially in Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa where there no stringent laws on tendering, have been known to give kickbacks to influence the process. The individuals and the key decision makers behind tendering are also known to ask for gifts and kickbacks so that they would favor a specific company. These gifts or commissions may range from a small gift to a colossal amount of money.Beckton Dickinson management team strives to maintain high standards that embrace fairness and honesty, and have designed a guide advocating for the same. They have issued clear guidelines to their employees detailing the company’s expectations on the proper conduct and business practice both within the United States and globally. This guide touches on the issues ranging from political contribution to what is considered to be a gift. The employees have raised their reservations on these guidelines and would wish the amount in regard to what is acceptable in terms of gifts to be defined according to the regions involved.Kickbacks and bribery as indicated in this report is not only a problem limited to any specific corporation, industry or government. It is a universal problem that equally requires global attention. It has permeated every aspect of business life and practice. An analyses of the problem would reveal that almost all the parties involved play a role in perpetrating the vice. The big corporations are in business and would want to under all cost secure the most profitable deals. Beckton Dickinson would in no doubt wish to expand its sales and maintain its market leadership position in supplying health sector appliances.To keep its competitor a bay it might be forced to engage in malpractices to secure the contracts. The tendering individuals also may be asking for bribes as well as the government officials. This problem hence is not perpetrated by a single party but by almost all the players. World opinion of late seem to be tilting towards unanimity in the need to establish strict anti-corruption laws in the procurement departments. Bribery is a vice that leads to morals and societal degeneration. In condoning this vice the perpetrators are threatening the social good.The principle of integrity, fairness and honesty are being threatened. It is imperative that steps be taken to curb this menace to ensure that fairness thrives. Small businesses are being threatened, as some of them cannot afford the bribes and kickbacks. There should be strict adherence to business ethics to level the playing field and ensure fair competition. Performance expectations gap is the gap that exists between what the society and shareholders expect the company to deliver in terms of performance and what it (company) actually delivers (www. abrema. net).The shareholder and the state have insisted on the adherence to the stipulated laws as far as proper business ethics is concerned. The accountants and auditors of Beckton Dickinson are having it rough and are in a dilemma as far as accounting fro the gifts and the kickbacks is concerned. The company has issued clear guidelines on the require business ethics. It is advocating for mandatory compliances on the side of the employees. The employees especially the personnel on the groun d claim the situation is hostile and tends to lean more on bribery and kickbacks.If you don’t pay for the gifts, the rival companies will do it and clinch the tender. The company has not been able to harmonize its ethics to encompass all levels of its operations. There should be distinct guidelines in the different regions. Whereas some gifts may be considered ethical in for example the United States, in Japan it is a different story altogether. The company should not abet bribery in some countries while being strict in others. However the recent steps taken by the company is a positive indicator that even though the problem is serious, the organization is taking bold steps to curb it.The top management has flown into the regional branches to train the personnel and emphasis on the companies stand as far as business ethics are concerned. The trend is not expected to change overnight. Gradually the company will achieve its key objective and instill discipline in this workforce . The situation though in the internationals scene will take long to change. The remedy to curbing this unethical practice requires a multifaceted approach, an approach that will encompass all the players involved. There are different approaches that can be taken in this.Some scholars claim that the big corporations are to blame, having recognized a weakness especially in the developing countries systems of governance; they have been known to use all manners of strategies ranging from intimidation to bribery. Hence in ending those unethical practices, corporations have to be at the forefront. Self-regulation of these companies has to be emphasized, change must come from within rather than without (www. newstarget. com) compliance with the ethical guidelines by Beckton Dickinson is a step in the right direction and should be emulated by other players in the industry.The key to unlocking this ethical deadlock however, many will agree, lies in the government structures and policies the mselves. The United States for example issued the stipulations on business practices and ethics as far as bribery and kickbacks are concerned. This greatly reduced the cases as bribery as corporations can now be faced with legal actions upon contravention of the rules. It is upon the governments as the key decision makers, to streamline their procurement rules to ensure fairness, transparency and accountability. Legal redress should be provided to the aggrieved parties.Although the corporations and the society have a role to play the governments hold the key and should be the one to initiate this change and ensure stiff penalties to the defaulters. Tumors and Other Lesions of Bone †Anatomy Research Paper

Tumors and Other Lesions of Bone – Anatomy Research Paper Free Online Research Papers Primary tumors of bone are relatively uncommon in comparison with secondary or metastatic neoplasms. They are, however, of great clinical significance because some grow rapidly and metastasize widely. Although tumors of bone have been categorized classically as primary or secondary, there is some disagreement about which tumors are primary to the skeleton. Tumors of mesenchymal origin that reflect skeletal tissues (eg, bone, cartilage, and connective tissue) and tumors developing in bones that are of hematopoietic, nerve, vascular, fat cell, and notochordal origin should be differentiated from secondary malignant tumors that involve bone by direct extension or hematogenous spread. Because of the great variety of bone tumors, it is difficult to establish a satisfactory simple classification of bone neoplasms. Clinical Findings Persistent skeletal pain and swelling, with or without limitation of motion of adjacent joints or spontaneous fracture, are indications for prompt clinical, radiographic, laboratory, and possibly biopsy examination. Radiographs may reveal the location and extent of the lesion and certain characteristics that may suggest the specific diagnosis. The so-called classic radiographic findings of certain tumors (eg, punched-out areas of the skull in multiple myeloma, sun ray appearance of osteogenic sarcoma, and onion peel effect of Ewings sarcoma), although suggestive, are not pathognomonic. Even a bone tumors histologic characteristics, considered in isolation, provide incomplete information about the nature of the disease. The age of the patient, the duration of complaints, the site of involvement and the number of bones involved, and the presence or absence of associated systemic disease- as well as the histologic characteristics- must all be considered for proper management. The possibility of benign developmental skeletal abnormalities, metastatic neoplastic disease, infections (eg, osteomyelitis), posttraumatic bone lesions, or metabolic disease of bone must always be kept in mind. If bone tumors occur in or near the joints, they may be confused with the various types of arthritis, especially monarticular arthritis. Specific Bone Tumors Tumors arising from osteoblastic connective tissue include osteoid osteoma and osteosarcoma. Osteoid osteomas are benign tumors of children and adolescents that should be surgically removed. Osteosarcoma, the most common malignancy of bone, typically occurs in an adolescent who presents with pain or swelling in a bone or joint (especially in or around the knee). Since the symptoms often appear to begin following a sports-related injury, accurate diagnosis may be delayed. Osteosarcoma can also develop in patients with Pagets disease of bone, enchondromatosis, fibrous dysplasia, or hereditary multiple exostoses. Osteosarcomas are treated by resection and chemotherapy, with 5-year survival rates improving from 15% in 1965 to 60% at this time. Fibrosarcomas, which are derived from nonosteoblastic connective tissue, have a prognosis similar to that of the osteogenic sarcomas. Tumors derived from cartilage include enchondromas, chondromyxoid fibromas, and chondrosarcomas. Histologic examin ation is confirmatory in this group, and the prognosis with appropriate curettement or surgery is generally good. Other bone tumors include giant cell tumors (osteoclastomas), chondroblastomas, and Ewings sarcoma. Of these, chondroblastomas are almost always benign. About 50% of giant cell tumors are benign, while the rest may be frankly malignant or recur after excision. Ewings sarcoma, which affects children, adolescents, and young adults, has a 50% mortality rate in spite of chemotherapy, irradiation, and surgery. Treatment Although prompt action is essential for optimal treatment of certain bone tumors, accurate diagnosis is required because of the great potential for harm that may result from temporization, radical or ablative operations, or unnecessary irradiation. NEUROGENIC ARTHROPATHY Neurogenic arthropathy is joint destruction resulting from loss or diminution of proprioception, pain, and temperature perception. Although traditionally associated with tabes dorsalis, it is more frequently seen in diabetic neuropathy, syringomyelia, spinal cord injury, pernicious anemia, leprosy, and peripheral nerve injury. Prolonged administration of hydrocortisone by the intra-articular route may also cause Charcots joint. As normal muscle tone and protective reflexes are lost, secondary degenerative joint disease ensues, resulting in an enlarged, boggy, painless joint with extensive cartilage erosion, osteophyte formation, and multiple loose joint bodies. Radiographic changes may be degenerative or hypertrophic in the same patient. Treatment is directed against the primary disease; mechanical devices are used to assist in weight bearing and prevention of further trauma. In some instances, amputation becomes unavoidable. The Polis essays

The Polis essays During the Archaic Period of Ancient Greece, many communities segregated themselves into small, subdivided city-states. Such cities were small, but managed to establish the very roots of democracy today. The term polis can be defined as an independent state governed by its population. Such a definition is accurate, however also could be considered broad and constricted. In deeper aspects, the polis was an organized state or community that worked together in upholding equivalent rights with an effort to prevent tyranny, or a state governed by one person. The polis went through extensive political efforts to maintain its unity and natural rights. Such qualities of a state led to other enhancements of the polis such as the social, religious, and economic aspects of joined community. The polis developed shortly after Cultural Revolution of ancient Greece during the early Archaic Period. During this time period almost every aspect of life went experienced a major change. Socially and politically Greece began to develop greater stability. Unlike other areas, which developed mostly into personal leadership, Greece followed an antagonistic political principle of unity and basic equality. The polis emerged from such political ideology to form a state of equal natural rights and the absence of tyranny. Some of the major reasons why Greece did not develop single rulers were because of financially weak kings, weapons which made war chiefs obsolete in strategic commanding, geographical isolation, and a simplicity of Greek life which withheld principles of equality. Such conditions helped curve the development of the polis. Politically, the polis was known to be well established. The political structure of the polis was based upon its value of equal representation and natural rights. Therefore the major office was filled with different officials managing different aspects of the community. One official might conduct...

647 W5 assign Fish Bone Diagram - Essay Example 183). The diagram was noted to be useful during brain storming sessions, as well as in investigating the root cause of how the particular event turned out that way. Through scrutinizing sequence of transpired endeavors in clearly categorized elements, the diagram eventually assists in illuminating the cause and the ultimate effect/s of a challenging situation (American Society for Quality (ASQ), n.d.). The example of the fish bone diagram is shown in the figure below: The fish bone tool can be used in project management through enabling project managers and the project management team to accurately identify potential risks in various facets of the project. As emphasized, there are â€Å"three categories of project risk are controllable known risks, uncontrollable known risks, and unknown risks†¦ Root cause analysis not only makes known project risks more understandable but also shows you how to manage each risk† (Kendrick, 2003, pp. 184-185). Thus, the fish bone tool enables enhancing awareness of project risks in various categories to develop strategies that would mitigate and manage these risks. The fish bone tool is created following these prescribed six (6) steps: â€Å"(1) Draw Problem Statement; (2) Draw Major Cause Categories; (3) Brainstorm Causes; (4) Categorize Causes; (5) Determine Deeper Causes; and (6) Identify Root Causes† (Fishbone Diagram Cause and Effect Analysis, 2015). For the problem that was encountered by Great University (GU) in the previous paper, the system failure could be more closely evaluated using the fish bone diagram. The diagram is created with the six (6) steps and shown below: Under brainstorming stage, the project manager and team members could think of all possible causes of the system failure using the major categories. These causes could be as simple, deep, bizarre, unique, or diverse, as members of the project team could think of. These causes could be voluminous and thus, should be streamlined according to

Religion and Theology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 2

Religion and Theology - Essay Example From this report it is clear that Christians are authorized to preserve the environment and make it a better place to live in. As a Christian, one should preserve the environment to ensure its survival. The destruction of the environment always results in the suffering of human beings. For instance, deforestation has caused desertification in many parts of the earth. On the other hand, desertification has led to drought and consequently famine in which many humans end up losing their lives. From this discussion, Christians should preserve the environment tirelessly as a way of saving humankind and the rest of God’s creation.This discussion declares that  the Christian belief in evil is that anything that is evil does not come from God.   Evil is anything that causes suffering to humans as well as their environment. For instance, wildfire is seen as being evil since it causes deaths to many animals while others are forced to migrate from their habitats. Similarly, war is se en as evil by Christians since it results in many people dying while others migrate to other places where they might not be welcome. To the majority of the Christians, one inherent characteristic of God is that He is good.  As such, goodness flows from God while evil comes from Satan.   Notably, the Bible states that God is good, and His love endures forever. This is one belief that Christians have maintained for centuries and has kept them to stick to the Christian faith.
